“ Stacey, you took her level of excitement from a level 0 to a level 12 out of 10 in about 60 seconds. Then, you bring her out here, and she’ s ready to tear the world in two, and then you wonder why she can’ t just behave, sit, and be calm?”
I started laughing. Damn, this guy was good.“ Putty is a dog,” he continued.“ She’ s not a human. She operates the way canines operate. Not the way you operate. She responds to your energy more than your words. So, when you take your excitement all the way up, she’ s going to react to that energy level.”
“ And when you get upset that she’ s not listening and you tell her to‘ stop it,’‘ sit down’ or‘ don’ t pull,’ but you are yelling and your energy is high, she’ s still going to react to that increase in energy.
“ When I approach her, I am calm. I don’ t need her to listen. I expect her to listen, and I’ m in charge. And she feels it. Now she understands I’ m the leader, and she knows that makes her the follower. And she responds as such. This is how the canine species interacts.
“ She doesn’ t need training. She already knows how to react like a dog. You needed training for how to get those responses from her. That’ s all.”
He was spot-on right. I was interacting with Putty for how I was wired, not for how she was wired.
