healthy is that it’ s only about what’ s on your plate. But nourishment is much bigger than nutrition.
A woman who is chronically sleep deprived, overwhelmed, isolated, and stressed may find herself reaching for food, not because she’ s lacking discipline, but because she’ s lacking restoration. Food becomes the quickest form of comfort available.
We all want, need, and deserve to feel good. And if we don’ t feel good – whether that’ s physically, mentally, or emotionally – we naturally search for something that will give us that boost we’ re craving. And often times food gives us that boost.
For many of us, food became comfort long before we knew how to process difficult emotions. As children, we didn’ t have the tools to navigate stress, loneliness, disappointment, or overwhelm, so food became a reliable source of relief. That coping strategy often follows us into adulthood, which is why compassion, not criticism, is such an important part of healing our relationship with food.
Where do we start?
The answer isn’ t more food rules. It’ s asking a more compassionate question:“ What am I truly hungry for?”
Our bodies communicate through cravings, fatigue, hunger, satisfaction, and fullness. When we slow down enough to listen instead of judge, those signals become guides instead of enemies.
