The Healing of Stillness / The Gift of Presence
In our daily lives, we rush. We fill our calendars and measure our worth in checklists. But when we travel, time stretches and softens. In the hush of an ancient church or the gentle lull of a riverside walk, we find a quiet place inside ourselves. We remember that it’ s okay to pause, to let our minds wander like a leaf on a stream.
When we travel, we are present-- and we are present, we appreciate what is right in front of us, instead of seeking more from tomorrow or worried about the past.
These moments of stillness are more than rest--they are healing. They remind us that the soul needs silence and presence, just as much as it needs laughter and conversation.
The Call of Connection
Every town, every stone and tree, has a story. And every story is an invitation to connect--to the people who shaped it, and to the people who walk beside us as we explore. I’ ve shared quiet smiles with strangers who became friends in small cafes, and I’ ve stood in silent reverence beside others who, like me, felt the weight of history in a sunlit ruin.
And even before I go, I consume the novels and history books like those we recommend at The Historic Traveler, to make sure such earlier stories are now part of my understanding, the context for what I am seeing. Let us be curious enough to learn and respect those who came before and those who now stand on the shoulders of the ones who paved the way.
Travel reminds us that our stories are all part of a larger tapestry. That across centuries and continents, our hearts beat with the same hopes and dreams.
The Discovery of Courage and Confidence
Especially when we travel alone, we learn to trust our own choices, to move forward into the unknown with a belief that all will be well. The more we do so, the more we gain courage and confidence in our own judgement.
This was the great discovery of my first international trip alone.
The Gift of Welcoming Angels
Too often we rebuff support from others because of pride, habit or unwillingness to appear weak or vulnerable. Yet, in travel, your angels are right in front of you-- the people who offer to guide you when you are befuddled by directions, or when you need help lifting a suitcase. Travel teaches us to be humbly grateful and to RECEIVE.
