4. Depression. When you are caught up in hopelessness, grief, and nonstop self-criticism, it is very hard for you to hear that deep, calm, knowing voice within, and even harder to trust it.

5. Talking yourself into and out of decisions. When you second-guess yourself, you confuse yourself and develop self-mistrust.

6. Routine. Being on autopilot causes you to stagnate and go to sleep.

LITTLE CHANGES ACTION STEP:
List two more intuition killers. Now list four possible antidotes to torpor. Here are some of my antidotes: play the music of the Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, or Buddy Holly; read a story out loud, preferably to a child; run or walk as fast as I can for one block; throw stones into the ocean; nap; call a smart friend to meet me for an impromptu cocktail; draw a tiny circle on a piece of paper, and then draw a very big circle around the tiny one, reminding me that the tiny circle represents what I think I know, and the big circle is everything I don’ t know.
